"It's been a huge change," assistant director of golf Gary Salvio said Friday, viewing the gooseless 13th fairway. "We used to set up blowers at least once a day to clear goose poop off the greens. We don't need to do that anymore."
Men's golf club President Peter DeFazio is the main Goosinator operator. At first he spent several hours each day stalking the geese with the machine. The birds began to scatter almost immediately, moving elsewhere. Now DeFazio only makes maintenance visits to the course to keep geese away.
The device is one of the newest weapons in the ongoing battle to rid parks, golf courses and other outdoor spots of Canada geese, a species protected by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. As a result, hunting is highly restricted of these birds, even the ones that overwinter in New England and don't migrate. So people mostly try to chase geese away from places plagued by Canada geese.
DeFazio has made such a study of Canada geese that "I have a degree in gooseology."
MANCHESTER The board of directors has rejected a proposal to round up and euthanize geese at the town owned golf course, and will instead seek non lethal remedies for the nuisance. Hunting, the best method to permanently reduce the nuisance resident goose population, is limited in urban areas, making it necessary to use other means to reduce adult survival, the DEEP states. Anyone with questions about nuisance goose can call the state the Wildlife Division at 860 424 3011.
"The Goosinator acts like a super predator. It stalks the geese on land and even goes on top of the water, which is the birds' safety zone," Bayram said. "This year the cart wheels are clean. So are shoes. Golfers are happy. We're having a tremendous year so far. Play is up."
"It was like a minefield out there from the geese, especially the back nine," course regular James Green, of Berlin, said Friday of gross conditions caused by geese that lived at the course. "It got on your shoes, clubs, cart. It'd get into your car and you'd smell that odor. Terrible."
Non lethal methods often include stationary fake predators, hanging reflective materials in trees near where geese gather and trained dogs to move the geese away.
Geese return to mate and raise families in places they have in the past. So DeFazio started in early March, chasing geese away and making sure they stay away.
BERLIN The hundreds of Canada geese whose poop once paved fairways and greens at the town golf course moved on this year, thanks to a remote control faux predator that looks like a fox from hell to the geese it chases.
Peter DeFazio has been operating a Goosinator for months at Timberlin Golf Course. It is estimated Connecticut has several thousand Canada geese living here year round.
He learned quickly to make the battery powered, 1HP device move stealthily on the grounds, advancing slowly toward geese like a living predator might.
The Goosinator, a Colorado company's bright orange foam device that buzzes loudly as it moves by propeller on wheels or skis on grass, sand traps, water, snow or ice, began patrolling the 18 hole public course in March. It began showing up on the course right after the men's club at the Timberlin Golf Club bought the $4,000 machine and donated it to the town.

Peter DeFazio has been operating a Goosinator for months at Timberlin Golf Course. After years of problems with goose droppings on the course, this small hovering machine seems to have forced them out of the area.
On Friday morning, there were no geese on the 12th and 13th holes where not long ago there would have been dozens.
Since discussions about the issue began, Mayor Jay Moran said Friday, several national organizations have approached.
Marc Bayram, Timberlin's golf pro, said the course set up a fake wolf that geese soon realized didn't move. Course workers hung shiny CDs by ponds to scare geese away but the birds eventually ignored themse. So far, the Goosinator is working just fine, he said.

Resident populations nest near waters, open spaces and fields, which provide the ideal cover and grazing area for the geese which can grow as large as 13 pounds, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection brochure states.
When on goose patrol, DeFazio zooms around the course, the Goosinator secure in a frame he added to the cart the course staff lets him use to do his volunteer goose chasing work. DeFazio has his own IT business and lives close to Timberlin so it's been easy for him to find time to chase away geese since the club bought the device in March, he said.
