Pier anglers and small boat trollers fishing shallow water have tangled with a few early fish, but most spawners seem to be hanging in deeper water yet. Many of the browns have been hooked in 30 to 60 feet of water and the larger chinooks in the 50 to 100 foot levels; cohos are still deeper, for the most part, and tend to move closer to the harbors later in September with peak river runs in October.
New this year, an early teal hunting season joins the early Canada goose and mourning dove hunts with a Sept. 1 start.
Remaining public and private land antlerless deer tags can be purchased limit one per day at $12 per resident age 12 and older, or $5 for a resident age 10 or 11. Cost is $20 for non residents.

Browns in the teens and salmon in the mid 20s have been reeled in this past week, and larger individuals are possible. The former state record brown trout of 36 plus pounds hit a plug off a charter boat this time of year, not far from the pier, and a few "kings" in the rare 30 pound class are likely still swimming. Some add marshmallow pieces or Styrofoam to get the baits to float up while others suspend them under slip bobbers when the wind and current allows.
The Department of Natural Resources website has been updated with the new 2014 migratory bird regulations and 2014 2015 trapping regulations. Hard copies of the booklets will be available soon.
Each significant rain event in the coming weeks will attract some fish into the harbors and upstream stretches while many others will stage in the near shore shallows, waiting for that innate trigger to send them into mating mode.
Heavy rains in the past week have lured the first wave of spawn minded brown trout and chinook salmon into the Ahnapee and Kewaunee rivers, but the best is yet to come.
